Net Puffed Star is part of Frank Stella’s extensive series of star sculptures, in which he explored the expressive potential of form, color, and geometry. Drawing inspiration from the abstracted geometry of star shapes, these works combine bold structural frameworks with a sense of movement and spatial complexity. The sculptures challenge conventional boundaries between painting and sculpture, unfolding dynamically as viewers move around them.

Constructed from interlocking aluminum tubes, the star forms appear fluid despite their rigid materiality, creating depth through layered geometry and shifting perspectives. Each work in the series reflects Stella’s continued interest in pushing sculptural language beyond fixed forms, favoring structures that feel energetic and open-ended.

CIG contributed to the realization of Net Puffed Star by 3D-bending the aluminum tubes that make up the sculpture’s framework. After fabrication, the elements were painted by Frank Stella himself, completing the work with his distinctive use of color and surface.
